New ‘Door of Equality (La Puerta de Igualdad)’ Public Art Installation Showcases San Antonio’s Welcoming Spirit

Posted 200 days ago ago by Stacey Norton (Arts)

SAN ANTONIO (October 26, 2020) – The Department of Arts & Culture and its Public Art Division today revealed the City of San Antonio’s latest public art installation at the San Pedro roundabout, a block north of the San Antonio Central Library. “Door of Equality (La Puerta de Igualdad)” is a bright cobalt blue gateway sculpture by the Mexican artist Sebastian and stands at a monumental 33 feet tall.

This generous gift to the City of San Antonio from Fundación Sebastian and Siempre México, “Door of Equality (La Puerta de Igualdad)” commemorates the city’s rich civil and human rights history. The sculpture symbolizes the infinite struggle for justice with two tightly wound, geometric pillars that stand side by side. The sculpture will be lit from within, marking the first time Sebastian incorporates light into his work. The perpetual glow further speaks to the fire and energy surrounding San Antonio’s history.

“Our city has a powerful history of fighting for rights that are inclusive and support everyone. Today, there’s many conversations and movements championing for thorough and considerate efforts starting right in the heart of downtown,” said District 1 Councilman Roberto Treviño. “The ‘Door of Equality (La Puerta de Igualdad)’ serves as a visual reminder of how we must continue to champion behind what is right and just.”

In addition to its symbolism, the sculpture marks the culmination of the exhibit “Sebastian in San Antonio: 50+ Years / 20+ Sites / 100+ Works,” which featured works that spanned Sebastian’s more than 50-year career at more than 20 free and accessible locations across San Antonio. The exhibit, organized by the Department of Arts & Culture, and the “Door of Equality (La Puerta de Igualdad)” celebrate the strong ties that San Antonio has with Mexico and Sebastian, who also created the city’s iconic “Torch of Friendship (La Antorcha de la Amistad).”

“With the current climate we are living in, one where walls are being proposed, I wanted to create a work that speaks to the importance of keeping doors open and being vigilant about true equality,” said Sebastian.

The “Door of Equality (La Puerta de Igualdad)” joins the “Torch of Friendship (La Antorcha de la Amistad)” in welcoming residents and visitors alike to downtown San Antonio, while also reminding them of the city’s rich history. The new artwork’s torqued twisted steel columns represent the grind of the work done by human rights champions in San Antonio. These pillars are equal in height representing the vision of equality, with the first symbolizing peace, tranquility and wisdom and the second column standing for loyalty, strength, and trust.

“This new welcoming landmark stands for the promise of opportunity that shall never cease to remain open in San Antonio,” said Department of Arts & Culture Executive Director Debbie Racca-Sittre. “The Door of Equality not only represents our City’s commitment to equity, but also in ensuring that art is accessible to all.”
