City of San Antonio Unveils New Art Exhibit at Centro de Artes Gallery Celebrating San Antonio’s Shared History with Mexico
SAN ANTONIO (September 27, 2016)
– In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture announces its latest art exhibition, “SATX/MX: Un Viaje Lleno de Cultura,” which opens on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016. The exhibition, featuring the works of 21 San Antonio contemporary artists, celebrates San Antonio’s shared roots and deeply-held tradition of cultural exchange with Mexico. The artists who have contributed to this exhibit are both emerging and established professional artists who live and work in San Antonio, exhibiting locally and internationally.
The exhibit will be on display at the Centro de Artes Gallery, on the grounds of Historic Market Square. Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio’s Zona Cultural, Centro de Artes is a two-story exhibit space dedicated to telling the story of the Latino experience with a focus on South Texas through local and regional art, history and culture, and showcasing Latino artists and Latino-themed artworks.
“I cannot think of a better place to host this exhibit than Zona Cultural – the birthplace of San Antonio. I am glad that residents and visitors alike can learn more about San Antonio’s rich cultural heritage from local artists with diverse backgrounds. Everyone should take the opportunity to visit this exhibit,” District 1 Councilman Roberto C. Treviño said.
The exhibition offers a rich display of diverse stylistic approaches and thematic concerns, with each artwork telling a story – from shared experiences to personal realities – of what life is like for these artists living in contemporary San Antonio through the lens of their Mexican and Mexican-American cultural heritage. Many of the exhibiting artists in this show are naturalized citizens, others have Texan roots for one or two generations, while some artists’ familial ancestry has been in San Antonio since before Texas was its own republic. These 21 artists were chosen though careful consideration of the narrative conveyed within their artwork.
Participating artists for this exhibit include:
Juan de Dios Mora
Joe de la Cruz
Jose Fidel Sotelo
Yenifer Gaviña Franco
M. Guadalupe Marmolejo
Juan Zavala Castro
