SAN ANTONIO (June 10, 2015) – The entire community is invited to a summer celebration of poetry, music and culture on Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 4-10 p.m. at Mission Marquee Plaza, 3100 Roosevelt Ave. The City of San Antonio’s Department for Culture & Creative Development will host “VIVA Poesía, Música y Cultura,” a FREE creative showcase featuring live music, poetry readings, spoken word performances and interactive workshops for all ages performed and presented by local talent – all at one of San Antonio’s historical and cultural landmarks.

“San Antonio is a city known for its vibrant cultural arts community and I am thrilled to invite all residents to attend this celebration of poetry and music at Mission Marquee Plaza, one of our city’s most cherished gems,” said Councilwoman Viagran. “We are proud to highlight the immense talent that our city has to offer at this event.”

San Antonio’s very own Poet Laureate, Laurie Ann Guerrero, will make a special appearance and read a selection of her works. Guerrero was appointed San Antonio Poet Laureate for 2014-2016 and recently celebrated the national launch of her new book of poetry, “A Crown for Gumecindo.” Last month, this native of San Antonio’s South Side was announced as the 2016 Texas Poet Laureate, a distinguished appointment she is proud to accept.

“The honor of being named Texas Poet Laureate is a tremendous one,” said Guerrero. “That my ancestors, who were indigenous to Texas – Tejanos, had very little access to literature and literacy reminds me to be diligent in my advocacy for both. As a native San Antonian, I am proud to represent such a treasured place and people.”

In addition to special appearances by Councilwoman Viagran and Guerrero, “VIVA Poesía, Música y Cultura” also will feature Anthony the Poet, Amanda Flores, Young Pegasus Poetry Winners, Gemini Ink, Say Sí, the Maya Guirao World Music Project featuring Andrea “Vocab,” DJ Jared “Max” Edman, Jessica Tilton and Nathan Zertuche, Rod Carlos Stryker and many more.

Attendees to this FREE event will enjoy complimentary paletas, art demonstrations, interactive workshops, gourmet hot dogs and organic juices and raspas for sale by food truck vendors, and more.

“VIVA Poesía, Música y Cultura” is one of many events taking place at Mission Marquee Plaza during an unforgettable season of family-friendly activities. The H-E-B Family Film Series continues on June 20, July 11, July 25, August 8, August 22, September 12 and September 26 with FREE screenings of movies for the entire family. Movie-goers can enjoy complimentary popcorn, activities for the family, informational booths and give-aways. Food trucks also will be available with concessions for sale. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early (gates open at 7 p.m.) and to bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks. Screenings will begin 15 minutes after dusk.

Mission Marquee Plaza was acquired by the City of San Antonio in 2007, and has gone through several renovations that include a mural re-creation project that was completed by DCCD in 2013. Since then, DCCD has coordinated several popular events at this historic venue for the entire community.
