Culture Commons

The Department of Arts & Culture’s Centro de Artes and Culture Commons galleries are closed in alignment with San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s Declaration of Public Health Emergency. For information about the COVID-19 virus and City schedule and service delivery changes, please visit:

Culture Commons is located in the Plaza de Armas Building and is managed by the Department of Arts & Culture. It consists of a storefront gallery located on the first and second floors as well as a 1,500 sq. ft. exhibit hall that features visual art exhibits, performances, invited speakers and workshops.

The vision for Culture Commons is to serve as the City of San Antonio's cultural space that integrates the arts into our civic conversation by encouraging creativity, supporting local culture and engaging our community in transforming the future.

Located behind City Hall at 115 Plaza De Armas, Culture Commons is free and open to the public Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information on reservations, please contact us.

Culture Commons is currently hosting a portion of the Department of Arts & Culture latest city-wide exhibit “Sebastian in San Antonio: 50+ Years / 20+ Sites / 100+ Works”. The city-wide exhibit includes more than 100 sculptures and works of the famed Mexican artist, on display through May 2020 in more than 20 locations accessible to residents and visitors alike. The featured works span the artist’s more than 50-year career.

While he is best known for his monumental steel sculptures, Sebastian works in many mediums including architectural design, paintings, art objects, furniture design, jewelry, costume design, set design and multimedia shows.

The Culture Commons gallery showcases prints inspired by architectural elements, and complex mathematical and scientific theories such as the Knot Theory, Theory of Relativity, the String Theory and the Big Bang Theory. Several original drawings depicting studies for sculptural works are also displayed.
